We like to blame the victim. It is much easier than examining our own behaviour. We see the entire problem as originating in the child. The context may be just as much to blame. As a counsellor, I see the same problem arising in families. The child or adolescent is sent to me to fix. There is no willingness to see the role the parents or the whole family may be playing in the child’s behaviour. We just want the child to change, not us. In so many counselling situations I have felt that the parents need the counselling much more than the child, and, if the parents were to get that counselling and change some of their behaviours, the child’s behaviour would automatically improve. This is the case with school too. If we were willing to modify some of our behaviours, the behaviours (and performance) of our students would improve. Sometimes it’s the school that needs counselling.
